Artist Bio
Maitha Hamdan is an Emirati multidisciplinary artist who explores her art through different mediums such as performances and art installation. Maitha has found that dealing with fabric and textiles is the common foundation of her artworks and performances in relation to her ideas, thoughts and issues faced from social boundaries, understanding religion and narrative stories.
Maitha is also a filmmaker where she performs her art in creative directing to her writing or any other writer expressed in Arabic language. Maitha is a graduate fellow Artist from Shaikha Salama Bint Hamdan Foundation program “Salama Emerging Artists Fellowship Program Cohort 7“ , part of Azyamii Program by Irthi Contemporary Crafts Council 2019 , a resident artist at the Cultural Foundation Art Residency Program 2021 and a current member at the 2023 Critical Practice Program in Tashkeel – Dubai.
Artist Statment
This is my journey of unlearning. Unlearning the things I learned, unlearning the love I got, unlearning the rituals I did. This is my journey of understanding life, love, history, and religion and performing it through art, films, and performances. This is my journey of using the earth and what you left to make and state my art, thoughts, and understanding. The artist thoughts dealing understating religious and societal practices and history throughout different medium; Art installation, performances, and short films. Maitha tries project her ideas, themes and art in a light and delightful colours that represent a character of her own, yet presenting deep and thoughtful meanings behind it. history, religion and society is what the artist is mainly looking for to present. The artwork highlights Maitha Hamdan’s unique relationship with her grandmother Fatima Bint Eisa by narrating their personal story. The message is conveyed via an installation that consists of several elements: prayer scarves that Fatima painstakingly made for Maitha during her illness, the scents that were used to scent the scarves, and the sincere words of love they wrote on the scarves. The artwork investigates the ways in which people cope with suffering and the potential for solace found in items given to us by those we love.
